Vidarbha's economy combines established strengths in agriculture, engineering, textiles, minerals, power and food processing with emerging opportunities in defence & aerospace, logistics, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. MIDC identifies the Nagpur–Amravati belt with focus areas including aerospace & defence, engineering, textiles and food processing, while MIHAN combines airport, SEZ, industrial and logistics infrastructure at Nagpur.
Nagpur's industrial base is moving further into higher-value manufacturing. Maharashtra's 2025 industrial policy proposes a defence corridor covering Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati and Saoner, while recent aerospace and defence investments include expanding aircraft manufacturing at Nagpur and a new automated 30 mm ammunition facility inaugurated in 2026.
Vidarbha remains an important energy region while renewable capacity is expanding. MAHAGENCO currently lists solar projects under development including 65 MW at Lakhmapur in Chandrapur, 50 MW in Yavatmal and 40 MW in Washim. Maharashtra's current renewable-energy policy further supports renewable generation and energy-storage development through 2035–36.
Nagpur's central location is being strengthened by MIHAN and multimodal infrastructure. The 150-acre Nagpur Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Sindi near Wardha began commercial operations in April 2025, creating new capacity for movement, storage and distribution of goods. Maharashtra's logistics policy also places Vidarbha within its priority Zone 1 development framework.
Agriculture remains an important part of Vidarbha's economic base, with crops including cotton, soybean, paddy, pulses and oranges. Nagpur Orange has GI registration, and APEDA recorded export shipments of fresh Nagpur oranges to Oman and the UAE during 2024–25—highlighting opportunities around processing, cold-chain, branding and market access.
Vidarbha's next economic opportunity lies in connecting its existing strengths with greater local value addition—stronger MSME supply chains around large industries, more processing of agricultural produce, better logistics access and new investment in advanced manufacturing and clean energy. The policy direction also supports this transition. Maharashtra's Industries, Investment & Services Policy 2025 explicitly emphasises regionally balanced growth, identifies an Eastern Vidarbha Steel Corridor centred on Gadchiroli's mineral base and Chandrapur's industrial ecosystem, and proposes sector-focused infrastructure and stronger MSME development.
